An Isolation transformer is designed to provide high-voltage separation between the windings and/or between the windings and the core. The purpose of this configuration is to avoid capacitive coupling between these components, which can be achieved by transformer construction and/or the use of shields.
High Isolation transformers (shown at right in photo) often handle higher voltages and thus require greater separation between windings and/or windings and core.
